Here for Kids: Yadira's Story
Meet Yadira Bernadac, a former CEDARS staff member who is now serving as Principal of Pilsen Community Academy in Chicago.
While studying at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Yadira worked at Clinton Elementary School, where she built strong relationships with students and families. Seeking to deepen her impact, she later started working at the CEDARS Community Learning Center (CLC) site at Clinton. In that role, she strengthened her teaching skills while continuing to work with the students she cared so much about.
“Reflecting on my time with CEDARS, I am filled with countless cherished memories,” Yadira shared. “One highlight was the summer programs, where we organized engaging field trips. I relished the opportunity to foster creativity through fun crafts and dynamic lessons, all while building meaningful relationships with both students and fellow staff members.”
CEDARS commitment to being here for kids and families left a lasting impression on Yadira and continues to guide her work today. To her, being ‘here’ means putting students and families first, listening closely, maintaining open communication, and creating spaces where every kid feels seen, valued, and supported.
“Ultimately, being here means that every decision we undertake—from curriculum development to extracurricular activities—is rooted in a student-centered philosophy, ensuring that we prioritize the needs, interests, and aspirations of our students in every aspect of school life,” said Yadira.
After graduating and completing her time at CEDARS, Yadira’s journey led her to where she is today, leading an elementary school in Chicago. She is grateful to work alongside dedicated staff, supportive families, and inspiring students, and says her CEDARS experience continues to shape her leadership.
“CEDARS has had a profound impact on my journey, especially instilling in me the importance of love and care for each student,” Yadira said. “At the heart of my work lies a commitment to serving all our students as they navigate their educational journeys. My goal is to create an environment where every child can thrive, no matter their circumstances.”
Thank you, Yadira, for being here for kids and families—always.
